Clichés to avoid (like the plague)

Clichés are readymade expressions that substitute for real thought about a matter. As the old saw has it, they’re to be avoided like the plague. (And who would court the plague, after all?) Here is an inventory, courtesy of the Washington Post, of phrases to strike in your own writing.
