Did Economists Get Tom Cruise Fired?

Movie stars are big because they yield big box office, aren’t they? That’s long been the assumption, but this New York Times article offers some counterintuitive economic evidence that suggests that the assumption is wrong. It’s a solid piece of business reporting, though less well written than James Surowiecki’s New Yorker article “Hollywood’s Star System, at a Cubicle Near You,” which reached the same conclusions five years earlier.
